About
I'm Daniel! I'm a musician, history enthusiast, and video game enjoyer.
Music
Music is my main passion. I'm a classically trained singer and composer, and self-trained keyboardist and producer. You can check out my portfolio above for a taste of what I've made!
I specialise in soundtracks for films and games.
My core influences include:
- Eric Whitacre
- Nobuo Uematsu
- Deep Purple
- Rick Astley
- Harry Gregson-Williams
- Michiru Yamane
- Koji Kondo
- a-ha
- W.A. Mozart
- J.S. Bach
- Tim Follin
- Satoshi Okubo
Maybe I'll do an article on each of them eventually!
Games
I've played a lot of video games! As you've seen on my home page, I have a few favourites. Here's a couple of my all-time picks:
- Final Fantasy XV (this website's background is from the title screen!)
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
- F-Zero X
- Hotel Dusk & Last Window
- OutRun 2006
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl & Ultimate
- Shenmue
[Honourable Mentions: Fire Emblem Awakening | Castlevania Aria & Dawn of Sorrow | Ocarina of Time & Majora's Mask | Silent Hill: Shattered Memories | Star Fox 64 3D | Ace Attorney (series) | F-Zero GX]
I also hold special admiration for a handful more games that are a little bit niche and unique, such as Lifeline (Operator's Side), Shadow of Memories, The Last Story, Enthusia Professional Racing, Lost Odyssey and Nintendo Land.
Phew! That's most of them. My Backloggd has a more comprehensive list of all the games I've played and their ratings, so be sure to check that out for all of the details.
History
I'm a big fan of history! In fact, I initially pursued Ancient & Medieval History as a degree before changing to computer science. I love seeing the stories from the past connecting and influencing the present, bringing to light the often invisible forces and foundations that created the world we live in. I'm lucky to live in Ireland where there is such an abundance of ancient and medieval history!
I enjoy combining this with music and gaming too. I deeply enjoy exploring historical music - whether it's Baroque, Renaissance, Medieval, ecclesiastical or even older - and love being able to build in historically informed styles into modern language and music. Many of my video game covers are focused on bringing old games and their music to modern platforms for the first time - sometimes re-imaginings, sometimes faithful recreations.
Tech
I love exploring old devices! It's partially related to history, I suppose, but tech from bygone eras is always of interest to me. Whether it's old game consoles, cassette decks, DeLoreans, PowerPC Macs and anything in-between, I always enjoy a good rabbit hole on them.
I'm the proud owner of some old-school hardware.
- I have a PlayStation 2, which I modded myself years ago and installed a HDD with the incredible PSBBN dashboard. Love it!
- My childhood Wii from 2010 is still kicking! It's been modded for a long time. I used to be involved with the homebrew scene with projects such as Disconnect24.
- I bought a PS3 again in 2025! It's a beautiful later fat model. It's my main Blu-ray player and I use it sporadically for PS2 and PS3 games. I was also involved with documenting PS2 emulation on PS3, but that's for another time.
- I have two PSPs - a PSP Street and PSP Go! I love the PSP Go. It may be one of my favourite consoles. I own the PSP Homebrew discord community and have been sporadically involved with homebrew projects over the years.
- Two very old Macs - a PowerMac G5 Quad and a Mac Mini G4 - are still around! Though I haven't used them in a while, they're a very interesting part of my collection.
Is the 3DS and Wii U old-school by now? Throw that in if it counts too. There's more retro tech I'd love to get eventually too, from the Nakamichi RX-505 to finding my ideal dumbphone.
I think that's about everything! Lots of things here will be elaborated on in articles in time, no doubt. Hopefully that gives you a good overview of my interests, passions and conversation starters!
